Screen capture is a recording of what appears on a computer or mobile screen, used in training video to demonstrate software, workflows, or digital processes.
Why it matters#
When the learning objective involves a digital tool or system, showing the software directly is more effective than describing it. Screen capture replaces abstraction with demonstration. It is also one of the most common forms of attention reset in training video — cutting from a presenter to the screen they are describing shifts the visual register and refocuses learner attention.
Capture by platform#
Desktop#
Dedicated screen recording software captures the display at full resolution with audio. Common tools include:
- Camtasia — records, edits, and produces screencasts in one tool; widely used in instructional design
- Screenflick (macOS) — lightweight capture with clean export options
- Most operating systems also include a built-in recorder (macOS: Command + Shift + 5; Windows: Xbox Game Bar)
Mobile (iOS)#
The iOS screen recorder is built into the operating system but must be enabled first. Enable it via Settings → Control Centre → Screen Recording. Once added, it is accessible by swiping into Control Centre. Audio narration can be recorded simultaneously by long-pressing the screen record button and enabling the microphone.
Planning considerations#
Screen capture sections require separate scheduling from the main presenter shoot. The software must be in the correct state before recording begins. Any visible personal data, test accounts, or incomplete UI states need to be addressed before filming — they cannot always be cropped out in post-production.
When planning a video script, mark every section that will cut to screen capture. This ensures the transitions are scripted correctly and the capture sessions are scheduled.
Key facts#
- Record at the highest resolution available. Downscaling in post is straightforward; upscaling is not.
- Cursor movement should be deliberate and slow. Fast or erratic cursor movement is disorienting for the viewer. Move to a target and pause; do not sweep around the screen while talking.
- Plan what state the application should be in before recording. Starting a capture session with the wrong view open wastes time and produces unusable footage.
- Narrate what you are doing, not just what you are seeing. “I’ll click File, then Export” is more useful than silence while clicking.
