Pests & Diseases

Pests: leek moth

Diseases: powdery mildew

Leeks prefer deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Need a cold period during vegetative cycle. Well suited to Portuguese winters.

Fertilisation#

Incorporate well composted organic matter before planting.

Irrigation#

Frequent watering needed due to shallow root system. First watering immediately after transplant. Drip irrigation recommended to keep foliage dry and avoid disease. Pay attention during bulb thickening.

Weed control#

Mulching with organic materials reduces weed competition and helps retain soil moisture.

Pest control#

Leek moth is the main pest. Remove infected crop residues. Apply Bacillus thuringiensis spray in the nursery and dip roots at transplanting.

Disease control#

Main disease is powdery mildew. Control with wide spacing, moderate nitrogen fertilisation, and if needed apply sulphur powder or sulphur mixed 1:1 with lithothamne (less phytotoxic than pure sulphur).

Post-harvest#

Upper part of plant can remain green with some light exposure. Can be kept for several weeks.
